The entry point for a Rig Job is a roustabout. A Roustabout is a all-purpose labourer who helps with drilling work. Their duties involve keeping the drilling area sterile and tidy and they also perform unskilled duties such as unloading and storing supplies, brought by helicopter and boat, to the rig.

The next level up in a Rig Job is the Roughneck. Roughnecks are more skilled than a Roustabout and are under the supervision of the Driller. They have direct involvement in the drilling process. They insert the drill string into the shaft and it is their job to bring it back out to check it for wear and tear broken drill bits. If they learn a worn drill bit they dismantle the pipe lengths and replace the drill bit. Their main responsibility is for maintaining the drill, making sure that it is in excellent working order.

The Rig Jobs above the Roughneck is called the Derrickmen and women. They perform their role 20-25 meters above the stump of the rig on the ‘Derrick’ which is the tower above the platform. Here duty is to handle sections of the drill pipes, supervised by the drillers.

The next Rig Jobs is a Tool Pusher. This person is in charge of the drilling operation which includes making sure the right materials and equipment are available and in excellent , all round working order. They are in charge of managing the rosters for the crews shifts and rotas and are responsible for the all-purpose health and safety of the rig.
